Teaching in Louisiana

Louisiana Teaching Fellows recruits and trains Fellows in two regions of Louisiana: Shreveport and Greater Baton Rouge. Candidates will be asked to indicate their regional preference when submitting their online application for Louisiana Teaching Fellows:

Shreveport

Join a network of outstanding educators who are dedicated to closing the achievement gap in Shreveport. LTF-Shreveport is entering its second year, with 26 Fellows currently teaching in NW Louisiana. Research shows that the single most important factor in raising student achievement is the teacher in the classroom. This is your chance to make an impact and join the call to action.

Caddo Public Schools (the school district for the largest parish in NW Louisiana) educates the children of Shreveport and serves over 46,000 students. Caddo operates 73 schools in total. With 6,600 staff members, Caddo Public Schools District is the largest employer in Caddo parish.1 The Recovery School District in Caddo Parish, where most of our Fellows will teach, encompasses a collection of schools within this district—schools that have historically-underperformed and are now part of a statewide reform effort. Half of the 2009 Cohort teaches at one of two new charter schools in Shreveport, Linear Leadership Academy and Linwood Public Charter School. To read more about our current Fellows, please visit our Fellow Profiles page.

Just over half (53%) of our 8th grade students in Shreveport are performing at the proficient level in reading, and that number drops to 49% in high school. Only five out of 10 of our high school students are proficient in math. And, only two out of five students will graduate from high school.2 We need teachers who are especially committed to changing the state of education in Louisiana. Become a teacher in one of the district’s highest-need public schools by applying to the Louisiana Teaching Fellows program in Shreveport.

Greater Baton Rouge

The 2010 Louisiana Teaching Fellows in Greater Baton Rouge will create a network of new educators positively impacting student achievement. The East Baton Rouge Parish School System (“EBR”) serves the Greater Baton Rouge area and is one of several parishes in Greater Baton Rouge that Louisiana Teaching Fellows will serve next year. It is the largest district in the state and among the top 100 nationally in student enrollment3.

“EBR” is composed of 90 schools with an enrollment of approximately 46,400 students in Pre-Kindergarten through grade 12. Other parishes that the inaugural cohort of LTF-Greater Baton Rouge will serve include St. Helena Parish, Pointe Coupee Parish, Tangipahoa Parish, and St. James Parish. Fellows will teach where they are needed most in Greater Baton Rouge.

Louisiana Teaching Fellows have a responsibility and an opportunity to do more to set and meet high expectations for all of the region’s students. The Recovery School District is working hard to move forward to improve education and ensure that the needs of all learners are met. This is your opportunity to become a part of this reform, by becoming a teacher dedicated to impacting the lives of the students in your classroom. We know that all students deserve the highest quality education, and Louisiana Teaching Fellows are dedicated to raising student achievement and opening opportunities for the children in our communities.

Louisiana Teaching Fellows in Greater Baton Rouge and Shreveport will form a dedicated cohort of new teachers with a shared mission of making an impact on the students of Louisiana. The first year for any new teacher is challenging, and Fellows should anticipate an intense effort, especially at the beginning of the year. A full teaching day is just under seven hours, from start to finish. Beyond the formal school day, however, Fellows should expect to spend substantial time out of class preparing lessons, grading student work, and communicating with parents and guardians.

Fellows will have after-school meetings with school staff, their grade-level or subject team, or students’ family members. Fellows will also attend courses as they pursue their certification, as well as professional development activities to support their classroom efforts.

Our Fellows understand that their hard work can make a difference in the lives and academic achievement of students in Louisiana’s highest-need schools. They set ambitious goals and do whatever it takes to meet them. Become a part of the teaching profession and education transformation movement in Louisiana...
