Program Overview

We need dedicated new educators to close the achievement gap in Louisiana. The need for high-quality teachers in the Recovery School District in Louisiana is real. Only 54% of our high school students are proficient in math and a mere 50% are proficient in reading. Two in five of our students won’t graduate from high school.1 You can change these statistics—research shows that the teacher is the most important factor in raising student achievement. Start your career as an educator by applying to Louisiana Teaching Fellows.

Teach where you are most needed. Impact the lives of your students. Louisiana Teaching Fellows seeks outstanding recent graduates and professionals looking to make a difference in the lives of students. This highly-selective program is designed to recruit and train socially-driven individuals, like you, who want to make a difference in public education in Louisiana. By becoming teachers in some of the highest-need schools of the Recovery School District in Louisiana, which now serves the students of Shreveport and Greater Baton Rouge, you can help to close the achievement gap and give students access to a high-quality education. The Teaching Fellows program will offer 40 new teachers the opportunity to join this selective accelerated route into the classroom. We are looking for outstanding candidates to teach critical shortage subject areas such as math, science and special education. Some Language Arts and elementary education positions will also be available.

Candidates will benefit from a streamlined application and selection process and, if selected, will have the opportunity to participate in an intensive Training Institute during summer 2010 before entering their classrooms as full-time teachers in the fall. Fellows will pursue their teaching certification while teaching full-time and will receive a full teacher’s salary once they begin teaching in the fall. To learn more about the certification program that all Fellows are required to complete, please visit www.lptp.org.

There is no one profile of an ideal Louisiana Teaching Fellows candidate. Fellows may be fresh out of college and ready to leverage their academic success into a teaching career. Fellows may be professionals with years of experience in the business or non-profit world who are ready to change careers to make an impact where they are most needed. As a Fellow, you will become part of a dynamic and dedicated network of new educational leaders, working with other progressive educators throughout Louisiana to raise academic achievement in our public schools...starting in your classroom.
